ROSES START TO BLOOM

Just before Christmas a young Roses squad took on South Africa SPAR Proteas in a rip-roaring series and came out on top, with performances all over the court that bode well for the future.

In their first home match since claiming the runners-up spot in the World Cup, England held off a strong South African fightback to come through and win 54-51 to kick off their three-match Vitality Netball International Series. Imogen Allison was named Player of the Match.

“We know we’ve got more to come but I’m really pleased with the players that came off the bench,” Jess Thirlby

“I’ve always dreamed of playing for England, in England, and to do it here in Manchester is even more special, especially as I had family and friends here who have never seen me play for England. We’ve got such a tight-knit group. Everyone in the team is so lovely and I’m loving being a part of it at the moment.” Berri Neil

A dramatic final minute saw South Africa hold on to a vital twogoal win to tie the series up at 1-1. The Vitality Roses were forced into several changes during the game, including losing Imogen Allison at centre during the middle of the game, but fought their way back and levelled the score deep into the fourth quarter.

With just under two minutes to play, Proteas defender Karla Pretorius picked off a vital deflection which allowed the visitors to take a two-goal lead right before the buzzer. Rolene Streutker was named Player of the Match.

“To show that grit and to at least afford ourselves the chance to get the win having not led for most of the game I think is a really great sign.” Jess Thirlby

The Proteas got close but England ensured a triumphant end to a year in which they had picked up their first ever silver medal at a World Cup. Cheered on by some 6,000 fans in Nottingham, the Roses charged in front early on and managed to cling on at the end. Fran Williams was named Player of the Match and the Series.

“So many of those players hadn’t won a series so it’s really special.” Jess Thirlby

“Being able to learn and build to win under these pressure moments is key for when you get into major tournaments.” Fran Williams
