A day with the Roses

Once both the national team captain and England Netball President, Jean Robinson had a day to remember as she got to spend time with the current team during the Vitality Nations Cup.

Jean, who played for England in the 1950s and 60s, went to watch her beloved Roses alongside Deputy Director of Development & Head of Volunteering Imogen Greatbatch and says: “I got to go courtside to watch the Roses light training session and before leaving court I was asked to join the full England group for the pre-event photograph, which was quite a thrill for me!”

She adds: “I then had lunch with them all and several of the players wanted to know what I could tell them about my time as England captain and as President of their sport. I was then privileged to meet the squad in the changing room – I was so impressed with their positive attitude, their enthusiasm and their discipline and was touched by their friendliness and interest in my netball journey. The day ended on a high when, after a very exciting match, they ran out winners!”

Jean concludes: “Some may wonder what was so special about the day but for me, having started playing netball at club level in the late 40s and finishing as captain of England, it meant a lot to see how our sport had progressed. I learned a great deal and I’ll look back on it with absolute pleasure. It is yet another highlight in my netball journey!”
