Focus on Sutton Town
We spoke to Hayley Myles, Head Coach of Sutton Town Netball Club about her club’s commitment to offer inclusive kit.
How has Sutton Town Netball Club embraced inclusive kit?
We have introduced a versatile range of kit options that includes dresses, vest tops, short and long sleeve tops, leggings, and shorts. This selection was developed in close consultation with our members, ensuring that the choices mirror the diverse needs of our community. Our supplier designed a range that maintains a uniform look even when mixing styles (like wearing a top with leggings next to someone in a dress) and we think we’ve struck the right balance between individuality and team unity.
Why do you believe it is important to offer an inclusive kit choice for netballers?
It is important because it recognises and celebrates our club’s diversity. By offering options that suit both girls and boys, regardless of religion, beliefs, or body image concerns, we send a clear message that every player belongs. When our members feel seen and comfortable, it boosts their confidence and ensures that they can focus solely on enjoying and performing in the game. This commitment to inclusivity is not just about kit – it’s about creating an environment where everyone feels welcome.
What have you learnt along the way as your club has worked to introduce inclusive kit choice?
One of the most surprising things was just how many players prefer the tops to the dresses. Initially, we thought the dresses would be the most popular choice, but the tops have become a favourite for many. Our supplier has really helped bring the vision to life, and the quality and consistency across the range have exceeded our expectations.
One challenge we faced was making sure there was enough variety in terms of fit and fabric but working closely with our supplier helped us overcome that hurdle.
Overall, the response has been overwhelmingly positive, and seeing the girls enjoy the kit has been the most rewarding thing.
England Netball’s Kit Guidance
At England Netball, we believe everyone should feel confident, comfortable, and empowered in what they wear on court. That’s why our domestic guidance focuses on choice, safety and unity.
What does the guidance say?
Kit should be uniform in colour. That means your team should coordinate in colours, but not everyone has to wear exactly the same thing.
- You do NOT have to wear a dress.
- You do NOT have to wear identical garments.
We recommend offering players a choice of kit, which could include: Dress, Shorts, Leggings, Skort, Skirt, Long sleeve t-shirt, Short sleeve t-shirt, Vest
Loose or fitted, players should feel good in what they wear. Just make sure it’s safe for play and matches your team’s colours.
Hair Guidance
We know how personal hair can be. Here’s what you need to know:
Hair should be tied back securely.
Hair accessories must be safe for everyone on court.
A single ponytail fixed at one point works for all hair types.
Head Coverings
Everyone deserves to play without compromise. If you wear a head covering for religious, cultural or personal reasons:
Hats, headscarves, bonnets or scarfs are allowed.
They should be soft, with no embellishments or loose fibres that could cause a risk.
Decorative accessories should be left off the court or covered with a bonnet.
Any edges or loose parts must be safely secured or tucked in.
Peaked caps, visors, or baseball-style hats aren’t permitted.
Why does this matter?
We want every player to feel like they belong. That starts with recognising that choice in kit matters, whether it’s for faith, culture, health, comfort or the weather. Feeling like your brilliant self on court should never be limited by what you’re wearing.
And for our amazing umpires... You’ve got options too!
Your uniform just needs to be distinct in colour from the players. There’s no rule saying you must wear white, especially not on your bottom half. Go for comfort, go for confidence.
One more thing… Sports bras count too!
They’re just as important as the rest of your kit. Need help finding the perfect fit? Click here to find out more.
