The play Cold Snap by Clare Currie, that we featured previously in 5TH QTR, premiered earlier in the year to great acclaim.
In the play, supported by an all-female creative team, Currie – who has said that what makes her happy in life is a “perfectly timed interception”! – grapples with her love of netball, the strains of the ageing process and the demands of modern life as the body, having once been a sanctuary, becomes a battleground for her to conquer.
Clare says: “The piece centres around the suffocating expectations of modern life, motherhood and the need to access mental health support, all set against the protagonist’s love of sport and a sincere appreciation of her own body. Things come to a head as she starts to grapple with the ageing process.
“I was very aware that I’d only seen a limited amount of creative work that considered women’s bodies through the lens of sport. However, I’d spent a lifetime playing and had relied on it as an outlet during multiple difficult periods.”
The play was also used as a starting point for a workshop run by physiotherapist Ros Cooke, which included a session on staying in the game, covering pregnancy, postpartum, motherhood and the menopause and beyond amongst other topics.
